Stretching from Marble Hill Park to idyllic Twickenham Green with its cricket square and concentration of Victorian terraced houses, Twickenham is laid-back community with a decidedly sporty feel and an eclectic Riverside quarter that contains some of the most famous pubs in the borough. The wonderfully named Eel Pie Island, is connected to the Twickenham embankment by a narrow footbridge erected in 1957, prior to which access for its residents was via a hand-operated ferry.

The area contains every conceivable type of property, from flats and purpose-built maisonettes, to Victorian cottages, Edwardian family houses and some of the finest examples of Georgian architecture available in London. The land adjacent to the river, running from Marble Hill Park down to Strawberry Hill, is occupied by a most engaging mixture of fine period properties, historic pubs and three grand mansions whose interiors and extensive gardens are each open to the public, York House, Marble Hill and Strawberry Hill House.

Strawberry Hill itself is a charming residential community, nestling on the banks of the Thames as it winds its way between Teddington and Twickenham. The area takes its name from Horace Walpole’s ‘Strawberry Hill House’, built between 1749 and 1776, and developed during that time from a small 17th century homestead of 5 acres to a wonderland of a Gothic Revival villa commanding some 46 acres. The house and its stunning gardens are open to the public, following a comprehensive restoration completed in 2010. Today the area of Strawberry Hill retains an exclusive character of its very own, and is served by a small collection of shops located around Strawberry Hill mainline station, with its regular services into Waterloo. The area is known for its peaceful air and large period properties, many of which have been converted into flats. St. Mary’s University, the oldest Roman Catholic University in the country, is situated on Waldegrave Road.
