The House

Since being purchased by the current owners in 1994, the cottage has been the subject of significant improvements, including the reconfiguration of the ground floor to include an open plan dining/sitting area with panoramic views of the gardens and lake; a solid oak kitchen, a new home office, a sitting/TV room with Defra-approved multi-fuel stove and a new replacement porch entrance. The Gardens & Lake

The main garden is designed with a 'Prairie Planting' theme inspired by the internationally renowned garden designer Piet Oudolf. It alone contains several thousand prairie plants, with the meadow a re-wilding exercise and planted with British wildflowers to attract pollinators such as butterflies and bees. The lawn area adjacent to the cottage has been designed with mature acers and blossom, and a mixture of perennials and shrubs. The front garden is fully gravelled and lined with five Tibetan cherries. There is a large bird population throughout the garden, including nuthatches, tree creepers, a variety of tits, finches, woodpeckers, sparrows, wrens, black birds and thrushes. Birds of prey are often spotted perched within the branches.

In recent years the lake has been largely cleared of overhanging trees and vegetation, opening up the views and planted with waterlilies and other aquatic plants such as irises and marsh marigolds. Several species of fish have been introduced including carp, rudd and tench, while the lake is also a natural habitat for moorhens, ducks and visiting fowls and birds. A wooden jetty was installed from which the boat can be launched.

There is a timber double garage with a tiled roof and an integrated workshop/storage with ample storage above. The tennis court has recently been resurfaced.

Life at Forge Cottage
Located on the borders of the pretty villages of Wonersh and Shalford, Forge Cottage truly is the rural idyl.
